Hare's Corner Mini Woodland Scheme

St. Patrick's National School is participating in The Hare's Corner, an initiative to help landowners make more space for nature.

In times gone by, landowners would not cut or manage the corner of fields to set them aside for nature. This became known as the hare's corner, a place where the hare or any other animal, would have shelter, food and a possible place to rear their young.

This scheme, run by the Burrenbeo Trust, invites people to plant mini woodlands, create ponds, plant orchards or get biodiversity assessments carried out. We were fortunate to be included in the scheme this year by Meath County Council, and be able to plant a mini woodland of 50 native trees in our school.

The last trees we planted 12 years ago are now being climbed by our students. Hopefully we can do the same with these ones in years to come, along with sharing them with other living things, while also helping us to support the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
