St. Patrick's N.S. has had a long tradition of involvement in the green school programme, co-ordinated by An Taisce. We have achieved all the flag themes, including biodiversity, litter and waste, energy, travel, marine life and global citizenship. We are currently looking at global citizenship and travel. Annual initiatives include composting, traffic monitoring, Bus, Bike and Walk on Wednesday, school gardening, energy monitoring, cycling training and recycling schemes. Each year a school pupil committee is elected to co-ordinate green school activities around the school.
Our school garden is part of our outdoor learning space. We have a polytunnel, which can fit a full class, three raised beds, a woodland area, bird feeders and nesting boxes, a pond and wildflower meadows scattered around our school grounds.
In the past, our school has won numerous awards, including being a 5 star RHS School Gardening School and as part of the Meath County Council Pride of Place Scheme.
Students take part in lessons outdoors throughout the year and we have a lunch time gardening club in the final term when our food is growing. Recently we grew tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, carrots, pumpkins and sweetcorn in our tunnel and potatoes outside.
We also seek their views in relation to safety at school each year, as part of the child safeguarding statement and anti-bullying procedures (Bí Cineálta) and around how the school operates in general. Their voices carry weight and have led to changes in how learning and teaching happen, including moving to more lessons outdoors.
