This is our 7th year with hens and they still keep laying. The pupils formed a company many years ago called the “Gugalaí Gug Egg Company” and received a loan from the Slane N.S. Parents’ Association to build the henhouse, fence an area of the garden off and buy feed. The loan is long paid off. Pupils in 4th class have taken part in a study of nitrogen dioxide levels at the front of our school, as part of a global study on air quality. Over 160 Irish primary and secondary schools participated in the project, which is co-ordinated by the Environmental Protection Agency and An Taisce. St. Patrick’s N.S. is the holder of seven Green Flags which have been awarded by An Taisce for various green school initiatives (recycling, energy, water conservation, travel, biodiversity and global citizenship) implemented in the school. Once awarded, work must be continually done in each of these areas to retain the flags. The pupils recycle phones, batteries and stamps and have several recycling bins in their classroom (as do the staff in the staff room), are conscious of energy and water usage and work on…
