Last week was jam packed with activities for Active School and Wellbeing Week, including sports day on the Tuesday. There were many wellbeing and physical activities planned, including an athletics coach on the Friday. On sports day, classes moved from station to station with activities including the local playground, Olympic handball, outdoor play, as well as the usual range of races on the field. Another Slane National School Parent’s Association 5K took place on Sunday the 26th of May, 2024. The rain gods held off, the organisation was excellent and the 5K trail course was immaculate. What more could participants have asked for (apart from flattening the hill up to the woods in kilometre 3)? Outdoor learning and play has been a part of school life in St. Patrick’s N.S. for the last few years. We have a school garden, polytunnel, hens, pond and an outdoor play area. Recently we have been involved in an Erasmus project with a number of other countries about outdoor learning and risky play. Risky play involves heights, speed, hiding out of sight, rough and tumble, using tools and nature.
