This is our 7th year with hens and they still keep laying. The pupils formed a company many years ago called the “Gugalaí Gug Egg Company” and received a loan from the Slane N.S. Parents’ Association to build the henhouse, fence an area of the garden off and buy feed. The loan is long paid off. Pupils in 4th class have taken part in a study of nitrogen dioxide levels at the front of our school, as part of a global study on air quality. Over 160 Irish primary and secondary schools participated in the project, which is co-ordinated by the Environmental Protection Agency and An Taisce. Slane National School are taking part in a two year Erasmus project on the theme of outdoor learning and risky play in association with Dublin City University. Pupils in a number of classes are being taught lessons outdoors, as well as being introduced to risk as they play.
